Why Silence is important?

May 14, 2023

Try recalling at what time you were sitting in silence, without doing anything, just sitting in silence and still. It’s probably harder to answer for city people because there’s hardly any silence during days, and even when we sit in silence, our mind keeps on working. Why is it so hard to sit in silence, but the more important question is why sitting in silence is necessary. why can’t we just sit and enjoy our show or music, what’s wrong with noise, if it’s making us feel good then what’s wrong with that? I’ll try to clarify it.

This is an AI generated image, which I created. Which sort of represents my dream and how I want to live my life.

Since childhood, we’ve been taught four types of pollution – air, water, land, and noise. I always wondered about air, water, and land seems a bit logical. But how noise pollution would affect in polluting this world? Why do hospitals restrict loudspeakers around them, It turned out to be that the more loud the surroundings will be, the more engaged your mind will be, and eventually it will increase your heartbeat, and the speed of our thoughts is very parallel to the speed of our heartbeat. An unnecessary increase in a heartbeat when your body is at rest is what we call anxiety.

The surprising link between your heart rate and wisdom

You can try this exercise for fun, try spending time with people who loves loud music and then spend time with people who loves slow and soft music. You’ll notice few similarities.

I think one of the biggest mistake of people is to categorize someone as a calm person or hyperactive person or an introvert and extrovert. This type of thinking is not beneficial and it’ll limit you in multiple ways and hence, it’ll be difficult to evolve as a human. For example, I love soft and slow music, I love quiet places and I’m most of the time quiet. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy loud and high base music, I dance and vibe a lot on loud music with my friends when I’m on parties. Please don’t try to be the extremist, everything in balance and moderation are probably the best options to go with.

When you’ll sit in silence, probably just watching a bird, or a sunrise or a sunset. Your mind will go for a peace ride, where you’ll not worry about future or past, you’re just noticing what’s going on in the moment. Naval Ravikant said – spend as much time alone, in silence, relaxing and meditating to know yourself because productivity is for robots, not that he is against productivity, but think of it this way, why are we working so hard right now, for a better and a more relax future? a hope? There was a guy, who was poor, who thought if he’ll get money he’ll live a peaceful life, now he has millions in bank account and he don’t know how to manage it and now he is panicking even more.

I once asked a good friend of mine, she is probably one of the calmest person I’ve talked to. I asked her, I always think to take a break and not to work on weekends, but I can’t stop and find myself working. Is it better to work hard? or should I give time for relaxing? She said – What’s the benefit of working if it doesn’t provide you time to relax and enjoy the other side of the life. And this is actually so true.

The truth is that you’ll never be at peace if you’ll think that peace lives after this goal. Getting a peace of mind is a skill, Initially silence will be very hard, probably feel like the hardest thing ever. Your brain will tell to probably take out your phone, probably listen some music, you need to resist it for a few moments.

I must actually warn you, spending time in silence will be very worse, I’ve gone through this, although I’m a quiet kid but when I encountered silence, My mind started chattering, Oh! why am I thinking? → I should stop thinking → why can’t I stop thinking? → Probably I have overthinking problem? → oh! no! → anxiety → my heartbeat is raising! → depression!! → it is getting worse!

Mind has the capability to make you believe what you think, after a point when you’ll encounter all your fear and when you’ll come to a point when there is nothing to think, you’ll start thinking clearly. You can’t intentionally stop your thoughts, but you can think rightly.

Silence gave me a lot of things, for example – Give me any problem with 24 hours, I’ll be coming with a solution. Take all of my money, I’ll be okay and be back at this point where I’ll generate a new income stream. I can think very clearly, it’s not because of books, some books have made my mind wires go haywire, it’s the silence, it’s the self-talk I do when I’m at peace. I think each and everyone can do this.

Action

  • Sit in silence for 10 minutes. Don’t force yourself to not to think, it’s completely fine to go your mind here and there. Just observe what you’re thinking. And question after every thought, why am I thinking this?

Conclusion

In conclusion, Spending time in silence is important because this is the only way to stillness, to know yourself. It has multiple other factors too, If you’ll know yourself better you’ll be able to think of why you’re doing this, a lot of times we just don’t think and do or say things without even thinking, and regret doing or saying that after. You’ll be more aware. Allow me to be a bit open and orthodox at the same time but I get some power, I’ll probably try banning public speakers and fine over unnecessary horns. You can disagree with my opinions that’s fine, I would love to know what you think, post a comment of what you think. Have a good day folks
